The world of today is different than the world of yesteryear. The changes are coming from many directions. The world has indeed become a “global village”. Organizations have become multinational, transcending national and geographical boundaries. The workforce has become highly diversified. More women have joined the management ranks and ethical conduct of organizations has come under a microscope. There is movement towards total quality in products and services. Customer satisfac­tion has become the concern of highest priority and management is required to do strategic planning for the near and far future of their respective organizations. Organizations are being restructured and redesigned to be lean and flexible and adaptable to change. Successful managers would need to acquire special management skills and competencies to deal with the volatility of the environment.

The job of the manager is one of the most rewarding, most exciting and most challenging of pro­fessions. Effective managers are effective leaders who can and do make significant contributions to so­ciety through the output of their industrial and service organizations such as businesses, universities, hospitals, government agencies and so on.

The primary purpose of this book is to prepare students to become successful managers, and to become more aware of the dynamic changes that are taking place in the economic, technological, so­cial and political environment around the world. This awareness would assist the managers to think in global terms and become more effective and efficient managers, able to deal with shifting competitive pressures and opportunities.

This textbook is organized in accordance with the traditional functional process approach. It com­bines all the concepts and strategies of modern management with a balanced coverage of various as­pects of the subject. Great care has been taken to ensure that the concepts presented are up-to-date and encompass the most recent thinking on the managerial issues and approaches. It is well grounded and authoritative in terms of the latest developments in management theory and practice. In addition, it covers the tools, techniques, and strategies used by effective managers in today’s dynamic and complex environment. The material has been presented in simple, clear, unambiguous and structured manner so as to engage the reader towards an appreciation of managerial responsibilities and challenges and to arouse his intellectual curiosity.

Dr. Jit Chandan holds a doctoral degree in Management from Delhi University. He is a Professor of Management in the Department of Business Administration at Medgar Evers College (City University of New York). He has also taught courses in the area of management, strategy, statistics, and operations research at New York Institute of Technology and at Baruch College (CUNY) He has been teaching at the college level for nearly 45 years and has authored many textbooks in business-related fields including Strategic Management, Organizational Behavior, Statistics for Business and Economics, Management Theory and Practice and so on.

Dr. Sambhavi Lakshminarayanan holds Ph. D. degree from the University of Texas, Dallas (Texas). She also holds a Master’s degree in Statistics with specialization in Statistical Quality Control and Operations Research from Indian Statistical Institute, Delhi (India) She has been in academia for more than 25 years and has taught at several institutions including New York University (NYU) and City University of New York. She has published in a number of journals and has participated in a number of professional conferences. She has co-authored 4 books in the area of management
