In working through this textbook in my physical chemistry course, I have found it extremely helpful to reference in studies and preparation for exams. In addition, the clear layout and distinction of the most important materials to understand within the book is very helpful in ensuring that the “how to use this textbook” tips carried through in the book. Also, each chapter is paired with practice questions which are of great help in preparation for testing and allowing for in-depth practice to review all covered materials from the chapters. It is easy to read and digest even the difficult concepts through the explanations and organization given.

This textbook does a spectacular job at teaching physical chemistry in a coherent way where you start with the basics and build up from there into more complex concepts and maths. It is also very helpful in demonstrating common mistakes and how to correct them. The practice questions/solutions were absolutely helpful and helped really tie the concepts and the maths together. Overall, this is a fantastic textbook to help you and others really get to enjoy and understand physical chemistry. Highly recommend, an amazing read/learning material!

When you’re reading Dr. Yokoyama’s textbook, you feel a passion for in-depth physical chemistry distilled in the context of relevant biochemical topics. Have you ever wondered about the change in Gibbs free energy in the cell membrane when two cells undergo mitosis? Dr. Yoko has you covered there. Have you ever wondered how the shape of a macromolecule influences its speed while traveling through agarose gel in an electrical current? Explained with finesse. Are you a daredevil who wants to be introduced the field of quantum mechanics as it pertains to biochemistry? Bon voyage! Dr. Yokoyama’s book will be your golden compass as you navigate through principles of physical chemistry (aka, baby pchem). It was certainly my compass. I also highly recommend purchasing the problem set, which will help you master the material before taking the exams (the Godzilla Thermodynamics question was easily my favorite).
