Put the textbook inside the course — and take access codes out of your students' first week.
ActiveConnect connects your LMS to the ActiveBook seats your campus bookstore supplies. Students open their interactive textbook from a link in D2L Brightspace, Canvas, Moodle, or Blackboard — no registration, no codes, no support tickets about "my code doesn't work."
Access codes are where digital textbooks go wrong
The traditional path puts a printed code in a student's hands and asks them to find the right website, create an account, type the code correctly, and match it to the right course. Every one of those steps generates help-desk traffic in the busiest week of the term — and students who give up simply go without the book.
ActiveConnect removes the steps. The bookstore assigns seats to students by their university email; your LMS link does the rest. The first time a student clicks, their ActiveBook account is set up for them with the book already in it.
What a student actually experiences
-
They click the book link in the course
The ActiveBook appears as a regular item in the LMS course — the instructor doesn't need to explain anything. Clicking it launches ActiveConnect through the LMS's own LTI 1.3 connection, so the student is already identified by the university.
-
ActiveConnect matches them to their seat
The launch carries the student's name and university email. ActiveConnect looks for the seat your campus bookstore purchased and assigned to that email. If the bookstore has unassigned seats in stock for that title, one is assigned automatically on this first launch — so a student whose purchase hasn't been recorded yet still isn't turned away.
-
"Your ActiveBook is ready"
The student lands in their book — an interactive ActiveBook with simulators, calculators, animations, and quizzes embedded in the pages — on the web or in the ActiveBook mobile app. If an ActiveBook account already exists for that email, it is reused; nothing is duplicated.
-
Reading outside the LMS works too
First-time users set a password through "Forgot password" on their university email. After that they can sign in directly to ActiveBook whenever they like — the LMS link is a front door, not a requirement.
Your bookstore and your LMS, bound together
ActiveConnect binds each university's LMS to that university's bookstore. Seats flow from the bookstore's orders to your students — and nowhere else.
The bookstore supplies seats
Your campus bookstore orders student seats for each ActiveBook title on ActiveConnect — paying by card or on Net-30 terms — and assigns them to students by university email as they purchase.
Your LMS unlocks them
When a student launches from your course, ActiveConnect checks for the seat assigned to their email. Unassigned seats in the bookstore's stock are auto-assigned on first launch.
Isolation by construction
Another institution's LMS cannot draw on your bookstore's seats, and yours cannot draw on theirs — each LMS is bound to its own bookstore.
About 15 minutes for your LMS team, same-day on ours
ActiveConnect is a standards-compliant LTI 1.3 / LTI Advantage tool. Your LMS administrator registers it once; we configure our side the same day; instructors get one link per course.
What your LMS administrator does
- Registers ActiveConnect as an LTI 1.3 tool in D2L Brightspace, Canvas, Moodle, or Blackboard using three URLs we provide.
- Enables sending the student's email and name in the deployment — the only two fields we use.
- Sends us the identifiers the LMS generates for the registration (issuer, client ID, authentication endpoint, keyset URL, deployment ID).
What we do
- Configure our side with your identifiers — the same day we receive them.
- Bind your LMS to your campus bookstore's ActiveConnect account.
- Provide one link per course, with a custom parameter identifying the book, ready for instructors to place.
Technical details for your LMS administrator
Register the tool with these three URLs. They're also on the setup request form.

| Included | Not included — by design |
|---|---|
| LTI 1.3 / LTI Advantage launch from any compatible LMS: D2L Brightspace, Canvas, Moodle, Blackboard | Legacy LTI 1.1 |
| One link per course, carrying only the student's name and email | Grade passback (AGS), roster access (NRPS), deep linking |
| Students read in ActiveBook — web or mobile app — and can sign in directly after first launch | Hosting course content inside the LMS; book content never leaves our platform |
What we receive and how it's protected
Verified, not trusted
Every LTI launch is a signed JWT that we verify against your LMS's keyset, with expiry enforcement and single-use nonces. A captured launch can't be replayed; a forged one is rejected.
Name and email — nothing more
We receive only the student's name and email. No grades, no rosters, no health data, no government IDs. Everything travels over HTTPS and is stored on managed US hosting. Data is never sold or shared; it's retained for the life of the entitlement and deleted on written request.
Frequently asked
Do students have to use the LMS every time they want to read?
No. The LMS link is the easiest way in, but after the first launch students set a password via "Forgot password" on their university email and can sign in directly to ActiveBook — on the web or in the mobile app.
What if the bookstore hasn't assigned a seat to a student yet?
If the bookstore has unassigned seats in stock for that title, one is assigned automatically on the student's first launch. The student isn't turned away.
Does ActiveConnect send grades back to our gradebook or read our rosters?
No. Launches are basic by design — no grade passback (AGS), no roster access (NRPS), no deep linking. The launch carries only the student's name and email.
We're still on LTI 1.1. Can we connect?
Not with LTI 1.1 — ActiveConnect supports LTI 1.3 / LTI Advantage only. D2L Brightspace, Canvas, Moodle, and Blackboard all support LTI 1.3 today.
Can you complete our vendor security review?
Yes — we complete vendor security questionnaires and sign data-processing agreements.
